Resume tips for this job
- Lead with preventive and responsive outcomes: attendance improvements, students connected to mental health services, college application rates, or reductions in discipline referrals
- Detail your counseling training and credentials prominently, including specific therapies used like motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral techniques, or trauma-informed approaches
- Highlight collaborative work with families, teachers, and community partners, since counselors succeed by building bridges between school and home
Common questions
Should I mention confidential student situations on my resume?
Never include identifying details about individual students or families. Use aggregate data instead: 'Provided counseling to 85 students with anxiety diagnoses' or 'Coordinated services for 12 students in special education.' Aggregate language protects privacy while showing your scope of work.
How do I talk about crisis response if I've had limited crisis situations?
Describe your prevention and early intervention work instead. Emphasize your training, screening practices, and threat assessment skills: 'Trained in suicide risk assessment and threat assessment, managed referrals to community crisis services for 4 at-risk students.' Prevention is just as valuable as crisis response.
